Neonatology clinic consists of: 1. Physiologic department 2. Department of neonatal reanimation and intensive care 3. II-nd stage department Department of neonatal reanimation and intensive therapy was reorganized in 1999. There are seven trained doctors and 9 nurses working in the department with 6 beds. 100-120 newborns are treated annually, most of them being preterm. Modern methods of diagnosis and treatment were implemented in the department in a relatively short period of time. For the first time surfactants medicine- “Survanta” was successfully used in Armenia. There is possibility to do artificial lung ventilation to three patients simultaneously. Such serious conditions like persisting pulmonary hypertension; syndromes of air leakage are also handled. In 2003, for the first time in the history of neonatology in Armenia, surgical legation of Botallo’ s duct in a newborn girl with birth weight 900 gr. was performed. This was accomplished in collaboration with “Nork-Marash” cardio surgery center. There are created all possibilities for cure and care about newborns with extremely low birth weight in the department. The scientific interests of the department are: respiratory treating of the newborns, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases of preterm newborns, feeding and care of preterm newborns with extremely low birth weight. Our department collaborates with the New York Babies Hospital (USA) and Hammersmith Hospital (Great Britain). The doctors of the department actively take part in the work of Armenian Association of Neonatal Medicine. The department is a training base for postgraduate training of doctors, residents and nurses. In the second-stage department, which was founded in the year 2000, further care and rehabilitation of newborns that were treated in the department of reanimation of the newborns take place. Care and observation of healthy newborns are performed in mother and child wards. A 24-hour mother and child living, and breast-feeding counseling is being practiced. Newborn care in the department corresponds to the latest international standards. As a result, in the year 2000, the Center was granted the title “Baby Friendly Hospital” by WHO and UNICEF. |
